Hailstones battered townhouses during a storm in Paris.

Dramatic footage shows ice balls striking rooftops across the city on Saturday afternoon, May 3.

Local media reported that several metro stations had to close due to the sudden inundation.

The freak weather was caused by a low-pressure system moving across France and Portugal, which triggered the extraordinary storm.

Hailstones form when raindrops are carried by thunderstorm updrafts into freezing areas of the atmosphere. As they rise, they freeze and grow by colliding with other raindrops that freeze onto them. This can also occur during spring and summer thunderstorms.
