The BRP Miguel Malvar, a former World War II vessel, retired in 2021, sank off the coast of Zambales before the drill could be conducted. Filipino military official, Captain John Percie Alcos, said the vessel could not withstand rough sea conditions. The canceled drill was part of the second phase of the annual “Salaknib and Balikatan (SABAK)” exercises, including participation from Japan and the UK as observers. Other drills, including a joint island recapture scenario involving US, Australian, and Filipino forces, continued as planned.
