BALTIMORE — Two Maryland Zoo in Baltimore staff members recently returned from South Africa after supporting seabird conservation efforts with the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB).

During their time in the field, staffers Jenny and Sarah assisted with the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of African penguins, a species facing significant population declines. Their work included feeding penguin chicks, preparing medications, assisting with medical exams, and helping adult birds recover from conditions such as heat stress and malnourishment.

The pair also participated in the release of 21 rehabilitated penguins at Boulders Beach, working alongside local conservation teams. A park ranger shared that natural predators such as Cape gulls and mongooses pose additional threats to penguin eggs in the wild.

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore's partnership with SANCCOB is part of its broader mission to support African penguin conservation both locally and globally through hands-on fieldwork and ongoing collaboration.
