STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. — A woman in distress was rescued from the Clinton River on Saturday thanks to the heroic actions of Officer Nikolas Bruno of the Sterling Heights Police Department.

Around 2:30 p.m. on May 10, Officer Bruno responded to Riverland Park after receiving reports of a kayaker in trouble. Upon arrival, he found a woman clinging to a downed tree in the middle of the river, visibly panicked and without a life jacket.

Without hesitation, Officer Bruno removed his duty gear and entered the water. Navigating over a dam of logs, he reached the woman and secured a life jacket offered by a nearby good Samaritan. He then swam her safely back to shore.

The woman told officers she was kayaking for the first time with her daughter and niece when her kayak capsized after striking a tree. She hit her head and was struggling to hold on. Her daughter was later located safe on the log dam and was rescued by the Sterling Heights Fire Department.

Officer Bruno, a U.S. Navy veteran, was praised for his selfless and swift actions.

“His heroic actions reflect the highest standards of duty and commitment to the community,” the department wrote on Facebook.
