Nearly 80, SC State Choir Singer, Vietnam Veteran Earns His Degree
ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Linwood Riddick, a Vietnam War veteran and beloved member of the South Carolina State University Concert Choir, received a standing ovation as he walked across the stage to accept his bachelor’s degree in music industry — just three days before his 80th birthday.
Riddick, who has sung at many SC State commencements, was surprised with a special moment of recognition from University President Alexander Conyers during the May 2025 graduation ceremony.
“Mr. Riddick at 80 has been fully engaged with the student experience, singing on this choir, performing at concerts,” Conyers said. “Mr. Riddick, you inspire us all.”
Riddick began attending SC State later in life after a successful business career. He said he felt called to the university after learning about the 1968 Orangeburg Massacre and wanted to honor the legacy of the students who lost their lives.
“I said, ‘You know what, I’m going to have to come here, put my name on this institutional wall because of the sacrifice of these three men,’” Riddick said.
Sam Watson, SC State’s Director of University Relations, noted that Riddick’s impact on campus extended far beyond the choir risers. His presence offered encouragement and wisdom to younger students, and he hopes to continue serving as a mentor in retirement.
His message to others is simple: “If I can do it, you can do it. It’s not impossible if you try.”
