China: Tech giant Huawei launches first PCs with self-developed operating system
[Voiceover] In a groundbreaking expansion of its ecosystem, Chinese tech giant Huawei has unveiled two laptops that are powered by Harmony, Huawei’s operating system. The MateBook Pro and the MateBook Fold have taken Harmony beyond smartphones and tablets, as a head-on challenge to the dominance of Windows and macOS. The new devices deliver a smooth-as-butter performance and feature advanced AI capabilities that do things like build a PowerPoint presentation with your voice. Seamless cross-device integration, meanwhile, lets users instantly access files and photos across Huawei phones, tablets, and computers. According to the company, HarmonyOS is the first Chinese operating system that unites mobile and desktop ecosystems, allowing developers to use a single toolset for deployment across devices. [Soundbite] Yu Chengdong, executive director, Huawei; chairman, Huawei Consumer Business Group: "We have restructured the operating system starting from the kernel. With a unified digital infrastructure and a unified ecosystem, we have built an independent and controllable system that is full-link and future-oriented." [Voiceover] Yu says the HarmonyOS PCs are encrypted from hardware to software, ensuring data security even if the hard drive is removed. [Soundbite] Yu Chengdong, executive director, Huawei; chairman, Huawei Consumer Business Group: "The microkernel design of HarmonyOS PC strictly isolates the core modules of the operating system from other service applications, reducing high-risk vulnerabilities by more than 50 percent. We currently have over 150 dedicated computer ecosystem applications in the process of accelerated adaptation, and another 1,000 integrated ecosystem applications have already completed adaptation." [Voiceover] By the end of this year, Huawei says more than 2,000 integrated applications will be compatible with its HarmonyOS computers. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
