Durango, United States - May 19, 2025 Durango Police were called into action once more when a kangaroo with a history of run-ins bounced into a neighbor’s backyard. Irwin the kangaroo, already known for a past police chase on Main Street while wearing only a diaper, is now being called “Durango’s Most Unexpected Repeat Offender.” On Monday morning, Irwin escaped again. Officers had to capture him after he trespassed into a nearby yard. But Irwin had grown since his last encounter with police, forcing officers to abandon previous methods. Durango Police Officer Shane Garrison said Irwin could no longer fit in the jacket pouch used last time. Instead, officers cornered the kangaroo in an alleyway. Garrison then calmly petted Irwin and managed to carry him to safety. Bodycam footage shows Irwin relaxed in Garrison’s arms before being placed in a patrol vehicle and reunited with his owner. The method of Irwin’s escape is still unknown, but officers suspect he may be slipping out through a door. Keeping a red kangaroo as a pet is legal in Colorado. Police are urging pet owners to secure their animals to protect both the pets and the community.
