BRUSSELS, BELGIUM - MAY 22, 2025: A young woman of Arab origin staged a powerful and emotional protest in front of the European Commission building in Brussels, accusing Europe of complicity in genocide in Gaza. Identified as Hesla, the woman joined a regular Thursday demonstration held by European Union (EU) staff in solidarity with Gaza. Wearing traditional Palestinian attire and carrying a Palestinian flag alongside a "WANTED" poster featuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, she approached the entrance of the Commission headquarters. Shouting phrases such as “I can't take it anymore,” “Your silence is complicity,” and “There is genocide in Gaza,” Hesla cried out for Gaza before collapsing to the ground in distress. A group of EU staff participating in the demonstration rushed to assist her. Belgian police arrived shortly after, responding to a call from Commission security personnel. After briefly questioning her, the police released the woman without charges. The emotional protest highlighted growing public frustration over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and calls for stronger action from European institutions.
