Newsagent in family for 100 years with founder's grandson still up at 5am aged 80
A newsagent has been run by the same family for over 100 years - with the founder's grandson still up at 5am to work behind the counter.
Colin Morris, 80, was born above GW Hurley Newsagents, on Burnham-on-Sea High Street, in Somerset, in 1945.
His family have owned the shop for 106 years after his grandmother, Mable Hurley, set it up back in 1919.
Grandfather Colin got his first job working there as a paper delivery boy when he was eight, and has just celebrated his 80th birthday on 1 May.
The grandfather says he say no plans to retire "just yet"."
Colin said: "My parents ran the business for 20 years and then I took it over, and I have been here ever since - it feels like an eternity!"
"I was going to try to retire this year as I'm getting too old and my legs are getting tired."
"But they have dropped the property prices everywhere - so I'm going to hang on until they come back again."
"It's all bad news at the moment, but I think it will come back once more. I'm still hanging on!"
Colin is now the third generation to run the shop, after his grandparents Mable Hurley and Gilbert Wesley Morris, and then his mother and father, Fhyllis Morris and Harold Morris.
The store owner is highly regarded amongst the local community.
Colin runs the store with his wife, Monika - who he says "keeps him under control"."
He still works seven days a week, wakes up at 4:30am to start at the store for 5am, and then finish up at 6pm and return home for 7pm - apart from Sundays when he finishes at 1pm for a half day.
He said: "It is quite an easy life now! You get used to the work times."
"When you are eight-years-old doing paper rounds I enjoyed going around the place and causing trouble! "
"I certainly cannot complain, and I have have lots of laughs over the years!"
