Newborns, mothers in Gaza face hunger as Israel’s genocidal war cuts off humanitarian aid

INTERVIEW WITH PALESTINIAN WOMAN SUAD AHMED IHSAN UM ZUHEYRGAZA, PALESTINE - MAY 26: Israel’s ongoing genocidal war and its blockade in Gaza continue to affect women and children most severely. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 90% of pregnant and breastfeeding women in the region face the threat of malnutrition. Deprived of essential vitamins, iron supplements, and basic food items, these women are at high risk of pregnancy complications and miscarriage. The lack of medical supplies and limited access to healthcare pose a direct threat to the health of mothers and babies. Despite these challenges, Al-Helou private hospital in the Gaza Strip continues to operate with limited resources. However, obstetricians are concerned about the increasing number of patients and dwindling resources. Obstetricians working in Gaza say that most women are only able to attend a few medical checkups during pregnancy, while some go through their entire pregnancy without any medical assistance at all. Many expectant mothers say they lack access to basic nutritional needs, often going entire days without food or having to skip one or two meals due to scarcity. Mothers who have recently given birth also report inadequate nutrition, stating that they are unable to breastfeed properly. As a result, there has been a rise in infant illnesses and deaths. Experts emphasize that babies growing up under such conditions are at risk of developmental delays and long-term health complications. The healthcare crisis in Gaza is producing irreversible consequences, particularly for mothers and their children. Israel has kept Gaza crossings closed to food, medical, and humanitarian aid since March 2, deepening an already severe humanitarian crisis in the enclave, according to government, human rights, and international reports. Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against defenseless civilians in the enclave.
