Desperation mounts in Gaza as crowds swell at aid distribution site
SHOTLIST: RAFAH, PALESTINE (MAY 29, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. VARIOUS OF CROWD OF PALESTINIAN PEOPLE LEAVING FROM AID DISTRIBUTION AREA 2. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) PALESTINIAN WOMAN SEEKING FOOD FOR HER CHILDREN RIHAB ABU SHALOUF SAYING: "I came here after hearing about the American aid distribution point. We came today hoping to receive something, but there just wasn’t enough. Yes, there were a lot of people, but the aid available couldn’t meet the need. They set up only three lines to serve everyone — as if they want to kill us. We want to eat, but we don’t even have bread. It’s been 15 days. I have nine family members, and none of us has had bread in over two weeks. We were told we couldn’t enter, that there was no benefit in staying. Every time we try to get aid, there’s gunfire — sometimes even shelling. So I have to ask: are these American aid supplies really safe? They say it’s safe, but it’s not. This aid is taking us closer to death, not saving us. We want to be rescued from death." 3. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) PALESTINIAN MAN FAILING TO ACCESS ANY AID OBEID AL-BANNA SAYING: "People went to the aid distribution point, just as they said. Millions showed up. I kept holding my card, hoping to get something, but I got nothing. There were over a million people there — how is anyone supposed to receive aid in that chaos? The only thing you walk away with is humiliation. Nothing else."SCRIPT Palestinians gathered in large numbers for a third consecutive day at an aid distribution site in the Morag Corridor northwest of Rafah, as humanitarian assistance remains scarce due to months of Israeli blockade. The distribution point, operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Aid Foundation, was overwhelmed by crowds seeking essential supplies. Witnesses said many people left with only small aid packages, while others received nothing at all. Rihab Abu Shalouf, a mother searching for food for her children, expressed frustration with the limited assistance. “They set up only three lines to serve the people — as if they want to kill us,” she said. “We want to eat, but we don’t even have bread. It’s been 15 days.” Abu Shalouf also raised concerns about the safety of the aid, questioning whether American supplies were helping or harming. “They say it’s safe, but it’s not. This aid is taking us closer to death, not saving us. We want to be rescued from death.” Another resident, Obeid al-Banna, said he left empty-handed despite waiting for hours. “I kept holding my card, hoping to get something, but I got nothing. There were over a million people there — how is anyone supposed to receive aid in that chaos? The only thing you walk away with is humiliation.” Israel has kept Gaza crossings closed to food, medical and humanitarian aid since March 2, deepening an already severe humanitarian crisis in the enclave, according to government, human rights and international reports. The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a brutal offensive against Gaza since October 2023, killing more than 54,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
