VARIOUS OF UNDERWATER VIEW OF VARIOUS FISH SPECIES, INCLUDING INVASIVE RED SEA SPECIES SUCH AS BALLOONFISH AND LONG-SPINED SEA URCHINSANTALYA, TÜRKİYE - JUNE 3: Invasive marine species from the Red Sea, including balloonfish and long-spined sea urchins, have been observed during both daytime and nighttime dives off the coast of Kas in southern Türkiye’s Antalya province, a local underwater documentary team reported. Kas, one of Türkiye’s premier diving destinations, is renowned for its marine biodiversity and turquoise coves nestled among lush landscapes, drawing thousands of divers each year. Underwater photographer and videographer Tahsin Ceylan and his team carried out dives across several coves in the area, capturing the region’s ecological wealth and documenting the spread of non-native species. Their footage features a range of marine life and details behaviors, habitats, and movement patterns, offering a rare underwater glimpse for non-divers. Ceylan told Anadolu that each expedition in Kas brings new discoveries. "During this dive, we observed a significant increase in the population of balloonfish and long-spined sea urchins,” he said. “Sightings of lionfish were rare, likely due to the recovery of protected grouper populations, but balloonfish appeared to be thriving.” He added that discarded food from boats appears to be creating a reliable food source for balloonfish. “We are fortunate to have such remarkable marine diversity here,” Ceylan said. “These images reveal a richness that many people never get to see.”
