Israel releases 12 more captives from Gaza after months of starvation, torture
GAZA, PALESTINE - JUNE 8, 2025: Israel released 12 Palestinian captives on Sunday, June 8, who were arrested during the ongoing genocidal war on the Gaza Strip after months of imprisonment marked by starvation and ill-treatment. In a statement, the Prisoners' Media Office, affiliated with the Palestinian group Hamas, said 12 released captives arrived via the Israeli-controlled Kissufim checkpoint and were transferred to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), for its part, said it facilitated the transfer of 12 released detainees via the crossings between Israel and Gaza, and brought them to the hospital for medical checkups and to provide them clothes and hygiene tools. According to an Anadolu reporter, the released detainees spent months in Israeli jails and detention facilities, and suffered from systemic policies of starvation, torture and medical negligence. From time to time, Israel releases groups of Palestinians it has detained since the start of its genocidal war. On April 17, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society said that Israel had arrested thousands of citizens from Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023. The group added in its statement that the detainees were being held in “harsh and terrifying conditions intended to inflict maximum harm.” Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a genocidal war against Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,900 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
