Woman outsmarts AI scam call by tricking it into revealing it wasn’t human
A woman managed to outsmart a creepy AI scam call by tricking it into revealing it wasn't human.
Candice Cain, 48, was in Pennsylvania with her daughter Catherine Cain, 17, for a baton twirling competition when she answered a call from an unknown number.
Assuming it was related to work, Candice answered, only to be greeted by a remarkably lifelike voice claiming to be "Nicole from consumer services."
Nicole sounded "real, professional, warm, even personable" enough to keep Candice engaged in the conversation for several minutes."
Candice grew suspicious when Nicole repeated herself mid-sentence.
She then began asking Nicole maths problems and historical trivia questions, which she answered instantly.
But when Nicole wasn't able to answer personal questions, Candice knew she was dealing with an AI call.
Candice, a filmmaker from New York, said: "She sounded so real, professional, warm and even personable. "
"But then she glitched and repeated herself mid-sentence and paused awkwardly and I just knew something was off."
"It was surreal and creepy, honestly."
When Candice directly asked whether she was speaking to a human or AI, the voice insisted she was real but continued to malfunction and reset.
She said: "I caught her glitching multiple times. "
"At one point, she paused like she was buffering. "
"She kept looping the same answers and kept insisting she was a real person but it was obvious she wasn't."
"She kept saying things like ‘I am a real person' even though everything about her was programmed."
Candice's daughter started filming as the two began asking Nicole questions including maths problems and historical trivia which she answered instantly.
Candice then started asking Nicole personal questions to test if she was human.
Candice said: "I asked her what is the square root of 144 and she instantly said 12."
"I then started asking her things like ‘What's your favourite ice cream?' and ‘When's your birthday?', just normal, human stuff."
"She couldn't answer. "
"She'd glitch or dodge the question and reset back to her script."
Candice, who has worked with AI voice tools in her post-production process, says she's now more wary of how realistic synthetic voices are becoming.
She said: "This wasn't like the old robot calls we all used to get. "
"This was convincing. "
"I talk to actors every day. "
"This is next-level stuff."
"If I hadn't caught it mid-glitch, I never would've known."
"This was terrifying and shocking honestly."
