US: Rowena Fire Rages On Despite Fierce Winds As Community Faces Uncertain Future
Rowena, United States - June 12, 2025 Firefighters working overnight on the Rowena Fire made progress despite strong winds pushing 20 to 30 miles per hour. The fire currently covers about 3,831 acres, according to an infrared flight that mapped the blaze. Fire growth was minimal overnight as crews focused on protecting the town of Rowena and the nearby Highway 30. Today’s main goals are to hold the fire within its current area, prevent further spread, and protect homes and natural resources. Additional aircraft have been ordered to support firefighters, allowing them to use direct tactics to create control lines along the fire’s edge. As these efforts continue, containment is expected to improve. Firefighters are also working to protect structures near the fire’s perimeter. They are mopping up burned areas and removing hazardous trees to improve safety before residents return. The ongoing work balances urgency with safety amid current evacuations and the risk of future fires in the state. Craig Pettinger, deputy incident commander for ODF Team 2, said this is an early and challenging start to fire season. “It doesn’t bode well for what’s ahead of us knowing we already expect an active fire season,” he said. “Long fire seasons take a toll on firefighters and communities across Oregon.” Today’s weather may aid firefighters as cooler temperatures in the 70s and higher humidity could reduce fire intensity. However, steady winds will continue to produce smoky conditions. A community meeting will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at The Dalles High School auditorium to update the public on the fire. A recording of the meeting will be available on YouTube and Facebook for those unable to attend.
