Austria: Vienna protest demands end to Israeli ‘genocide’ in Gaza, condemns Austrian complicity
SHOTLIST VIENNA, AUSTRIA (JUNE 28, 2025) (ANADOLU-ACCESS ALL) 1. PRO-PALESTINE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHING, CHANTING SLOGANS 2. CLOSE-UP OF SIGN READING “JEWS AGAINST GENOCIDE” 3. VARIOUS OF DEMONSTRATORS MARCHING, CHANTING SLOGANS 4. (SOUNDBITE) (German) ACTIVIST WILHELM LANGTHALER, SAYING: “Our government supports Israel unconditionally. Our government is complicit in the genocide. We cannot accept this — the genocide and also the massacre. Because they also support the blockade of Gaza. What is happening there is horrific. And this government is participating in all of it. Many European countries are reconsidering their stance. For example, Ireland or Spain are considering imposing sanctions against Israel. Austria is blocking this. We stand for human rights, and they are against human rights. We are fighting for the fundamental rights of all people. And Palestinians are also human beings. The participants want to say: ‘Stop the genocide. End the blockade, freedom for Palestinians.’ Without the West, the genocide would not be possible. The USA, the European Union, and most European countries are co-responsible. The weapons come from Europe and the USA. Everything is decided in Washington, Brussels, and European capitals. We are part of this society that shares responsibility. And our government is complicit. That is why we are protesting.” VIENNA, AUSTRIA - JUNE 28: Hundreds of protesters gathered in Vienna on Sunday, calling for an end to Israel’s military offensive in Gaza and condemning Western support for the Israeli government. The demonstration, organized by more than 30 civil society groups, saw participants march from the Austrian Parliament to the Federal Chancellery, waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans such as "Free Palestine," "Stop the genocide in Gaza," and "Netanyahu will be arrested; the child killer will go to jail." Protesters carried banners reading "Stop Israeli terror" and accused Austria of complicity in the violence by providing political backing to Israel. Among the speakers was Yasemin Acar, a German activist who was aboard the "Madleen," a humanitarian aid ship detained by Israel en route to Gaza. Wilhelm Langthaler, an Austrian activist and one of the protest organizers, told Anadolu Agency that Austria’s unconditional support for Israel makes it complicit in the war. "Our government supports Israel unconditionally. It is complicit in the genocide and the blockade of Gaza," Langthaler said. "What’s happening there is horrific, and Austria is participating in it." He criticized Austria for blocking efforts by other European nations, such as Ireland and Spain, to impose sanctions on Israel. " We stand for human rights, and they are against human rights. We are fighting for the fundamental rights of all people. And Palestinians are also human beings," he added. Langthaler emphasized that Western nations bear responsibility for the ongoing violence. " Without the West, the genocide would not be possible. The USA, the European Union, and most European countries are co-responsible. The weapons come from Europe and the USA. Everything is decided in Washington, Brussels, and European capitals. We are part of this society that shares responsibility. And our government is complicit.." The demonstration ended with calls for an immediate ceasefire, an end to the blockade of Gaza, and freedom for Palestinians. Reporting by Salih Okuroglu Writing by Sibel Uygun
