The “Srebrenica Flower” monument built at the United Nations Square, stands as a tribute to more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys killed during the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica.
The opening ceremony was attended by Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Presidency Chairman Zeljko Komsic, Bosniak member of the Presidency Denis Becirovic, Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic, Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, as well as many mothers who lost family members in the genocide and representatives of the Bosnian community in Austria.
Following speeches, poems and hymns were recited in memory of the victims. The unveiling of the Srebrenica Flower Memorial was carried out jointly by officials and the Srebrenica mothers.
In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces attacked the UN-declared safe area of Srebrenica, killing more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys despite the presence of Dutch peacekeepers.
Forces led by Gen. Ratko Mladic, who was later sentenced to life for war crimes and genocide, overran the area on July 11, executing 2,000 men and boys that day and thousands more in the following days as they fled to nearby forests.
The bodies of victims have been found in 570 mass graves across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
