Ferrari bursts into flames before completely melting, driver escapes after being warned by passing motorists
Around 5pm on July 1 in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, a yellow Ferrari 458 suddenly caught fire while driving.
The fire reportedly began at the rear of the vehicle, rapidly spreading to the back seats and producing thick plumes of smoke. Alarmingly, the two women in the driver and passenger seats were initially unaware of the fire. Fortunately, nearby drivers alerted them in time, allowing them to stop the car and evacuate safely. Neither woman was injured.
Local traffic police and firefighters responded swiftly. Officers secured the area to prevent secondary accidents and temporarily closed the road, while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. Despite their efforts, the Ferrari was already half-destroyed by the time the fire was put out. The rear-mounted engine was completely ruined, and the vehicle has since been declared a total loss and entered the scrapping process.
According to reports, the Ferrari 458 had been rented out by its owner to a car rental company. The car’s market price when new exceeds 5 million yuan (approx. $690,000).
The car owner and rental company suspect the fire may have been caused by driver error. Mid-engine supercars like the Ferrari 458 are not well-suited to heat dissipation, especially when driven by inexperienced users in low gear at high RPMs, which can lead to overheating and spontaneous combustion. However, local traffic authorities say the exact cause is still under investigation.
The owner has stated that the damage is too severe to warrant repairs and is currently negotiating compensation with the rental client.
