In a statement, the hospital said the fuel required to operate the generators would be exhausted “within hours,” putting the lives of hundreds of patients at risk. Located in the city of Deir al-Balah, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital going out of service would deprive nearly 500,000 Palestinians in central Gaza of access to healthcare, the statement noted. It added that the hospital’s main generator was out of order and the spare part needed for its maintenance was unavailable. Calling on the international community and humanitarian organizations, the statement urged an “immediate intervention” to prevent the shutdown of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Gaza’s Health Ministry warned on July 5 that the lack of fuel needed to operate hospital generators could force life-saving units to cease operations in hospitals across the Gaza Strip. In the few hospitals still operating in Gaza, medical devices in patient and emergency wards rely entirely on electricity supplied by generators. Israel’s restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid, medicine, and fuel into Gaza directly threaten the lives of patients and the wounded who depend on medical equipment powered by generators. The Israeli army continues to target schools, hospitals, and tents sheltering displaced persons, deepening the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army has killed more than 57,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. US President Donald Trump, set to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday, said he believed a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could happen this week.
