The UN Security Council on Monday adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN missions in Yemen to support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA) until Jan. 28, 2026. The resolution expresses the council's intention to review the full range of options for UNMHA's mandate, including assessing the future viability and sunsetting of the mission, and make any necessary adjustments to gain efficiencies and reduce costs or otherwise as may be required by developments on the ground, including a durable nationwide ceasefire. Following the adoption of the resolution, Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, expressed China's support for it. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the ongoing mission's operations for regional stability and underscored the needs to respect Yemen's sovereignty and ensure the safety of the support mission. Meanwhile, China reaffirmed that the Yemen issue should be resolved through political means and called on all parties to resume dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible and promote a comprehensive political process led and owned by the Yemenis. UNMHA was established in January 2019, after an agreement was reached between the Yemeni government and the Houthi group in Stockholm, Sweden, in December 2018, to oversee the cessation of military activities in the Hodeidah region. The initial mandate of the mission was six months and was subsequently extended several times.
