US, Phoenix: Phoenix Possible Copper Thief Crashes After Fleeing From Police

Phoenix, United States - January 20, 2026 01/20/2026 01:30 am GMT-0700 PHOENIX, Ariz. – According to officers at the scene, Phoenix police officers responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle inside a new build housing development near 97th Avenue and Thomas Road. Officers located a Dodge Magnum that matched the description of the reported suspicious vehicle. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect refused to yield. Seconds later, the vehicle crashed into a drainage ditch near Verde Lane and 96th Lane. Officers surrounded the vehicle and initiated a high-risk traffic stop. Officers issued several commands, but the suspect refused to comply. The suspect spun the wheels of his vehicle several times, attempting to drive out of the ditch. The suspect was unsuccessful because the vehicle was positioned in the ditch. The suspect surrendered following a brief standoff. Upon searching the vehicle, officers located several cut pieces of copper wire and pipes along with other paraphernalia consistent with copper theft. Officers are working to determine the origin of the copper found in the vehicle.
