Plainfield, United States - July 14, 2025 A video posted by X user CyberP shows severe flooding sweeping through the streets of Plainfield, New Jersey. CyberP wrote, “This was the first break in the Plainfield flood storm and then it started raining again for another half hour.” The flash flood, which battered the area on July 14, is being blamed for the deaths of two people. According to officials, a vehicle was swept into Cedar Brook, and both victims were found inside. “They were in a submerged automobile, and their remains were extracted at some point overnight or first thing this morning,” Governor Murphy confirmed. This tragedy comes just weeks after two other people in Plainfield died in a fast-moving storm. That same system also killed a woman in North Plainfield. “All of Plainfield grieves this latest loss,” said Mayor Adrian O'Mapp. “To lose four residents in such a short span of time is unimaginable. We mourn with the families, and we remain committed to doing all we can to strengthen our emergency response systems and protect residents from future harms.” While first responders worked to rescue people from rising floodwaters and close off flooded roads, they were also called to a house explosion in North Plainfield. When crews arrived at Parkview Avenue, they found the house reduced to rubble. Only the staircase remained intact. The explosion was so violent that debris was found halfway down the block. Firefighters reported the structure was already engulfed in flames when they arrived. Despite the devastation, no one was inside the home at the time, and no injuries were reported among emergency crews. Flooding made the firefighting effort more difficult, with responders wading through ankle-deep water to haul hose lines into position.
