GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - JULY 17, 2025: A funeral service was held on Thursday, July 17, for three Christian worshippers killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood. The attack, which hit the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, also wounded eleven others, including the church’s priest. The site had been sheltering hundreds of civilians displaced by the ongoing conflict. According to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, nine people were injured—one critically—while Gaza’s Civil Defense Agency reported that two elderly Palestinians were among the dead. The Israeli army said it is reviewing the circumstances of the strike and claimed to take precautions to limit harm to civilians and religious sites. In its offensive since October 2023, the Israeli army has struck multiple places of worship in Gaza, including the Baptist Church and the ancient Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Porphyrius. The Holy Family Church has also served as a shelter for displaced Christian and Muslim Palestinians. Rejecting calls for a ceasefire, Israel’s military campaign has killed nearly 58,700 Palestinians—mostly women and children—and devastated the enclave. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
