CCTV footage captures 'Molotov cocktail' attack on Republican party office
CCTV shows a grinning teen throwing what appears to be a "Molotov cocktail" at a Republican committee headquarters building."
Police said
Zayn Edward Arcand, 19, said tried to burn down the Dickinson County Republican Committee Headquarters in Iron Mountain, Michigan, on Saturday. He was arrested and faces multiple charges
Newly-release footage shows a young man outside the building at 617 North Stephenson Avenue attempting to ignite a rag sticking out of a glass bottle before hurling it at the building.
The device failed to ignite, but shattered on impact. A second similar bottle was later found in the building's parking lot, according to police.
Police say the suspect admitted "making the bottles in his driveway and he threw the bottle at the building to send a message against the corruption"."
In a release, police added: "The suspect was hoping what he made was flammable and would ignite."
Angela Hall, 47, a dentist and chairwoman of the Dickinson County Republican Committee in Iron Mountain, said she's shocked and worried it "might be part of something larger"."
"We're in a very small town where these things don't typically happen," she said."
"I became increasingly concerned when I discovered the suspect's social media had references to Antifa, making me worry this might be part of something larger."
No injuries or major property damage were reported.
Hall says officials later assured her the suspect appeared to have acted alone, but the implications of the attack remain unsettling for local residents.
"Violence is never the way to create change," Hall said. "If you're dissatisfied with political actions, become politically active instead. "
According to police, both were constructed at the suspect's home earlier that day.
Authorities quickly identified and arrested the suspect, who is reported to be Arcand, of Iron Mountain.
Arcand is being held at the Dickinson County Jail and faces charges including the manufacture or possession of a Molotov cocktail causing property damage, and arson-related offenses.
His bond has been set at $15,000.
"Attacking our small party office in Iron Mountain has zero effect at the level I believe the suspect's discontent comes from," Hall said."
Despite the attempted firebombing, Hall expressed compassion for the young man involved and called on her fellow Republicans to do the same.
"My heart breaks for this young individual," she said. "I don't know what path led them here, but it's sad that someone in our community harbors such hatred. "
"I'm encouraging our members to pray for this person. If they knew us, I don't think they would hate us or want to attack our building."
But added: "I would like to see justice from the legal perspective."
"We're at the edge of a concerning precedent - if this individual isn't prosecuted fully, it could leave the door open for similar acts if there aren't consequences."
