(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ARCHAEOLOGIST MAURO ORDONEZ SAYING: "According to the research, it has been speculatively determined that the urban center was founded around 1800 BC. This date is significant, as it coincides with a period of crisis in the city of Caral, during which Penico emerges in its full splendor. Excavations carried out in various buildings have uncovered evidence originating from the highlands, the jungle, and even the coast. This suggests that different groups arrived during that time to engage in exchanges—and that, above all, knowledge was exchanged in those interactions".LIMA, PERU - JULY 17: Peruvian archaeologists have discovered an ancient city in northern Barranca province after eight years of excavations, as part of efforts to learn more about early pre-Hispanic trade networks that followed the Sacred City of Caral, officials said. The 3,500-year-old city, named Penico, is believed to have served as a key trading hub connecting early Pacific coast communities with those living in the Andes mountains and Amazon basin. Excavations uncovered 18 structures, including ceremonial temples, residential areas, clay figurines, and necklaces made from seashells. Speaking about the discovery, archaeologist Mauro Ordonez said the city is thought to have been founded around 1800 BC, during “a period of crisis in the city of Caral,” and that Penico emerged “in its full splendor” at that time. He added that artifacts found at the site point to interaction between groups from “the highlands, the jungle, and even the coast,” suggesting active cultural and knowledge exchange. Penico is situated close to Caral, one of the earliest known civilizations in the Americas, founded around 3000 BC in Peru’s Supe Valley. Caral is notable for its 32 monumental structures, including pyramids, urban settlements, and advanced irrigation systems. Scholars believe it developed independently from other ancient civilizations like those in Egypt, India, Sumer, and China. Peru remains a key center for major archaeological discoveries, such as the Inca site Machu Picchu in the Andes and the Nazca Lines along the country’s central coast.
