Phoenix, United States - July 26, 2025 07/26/2025 04:00 am GMT-0700 PHOENIX, Ariz. – Phoenix police and Phoenix Fire Department crews responded to initial reports of a person trapped in a vehicle that had fallen into a sinkhole at the intersection of 50th Avenue and Nancy Lane around 4:00 a.m. According to police at the scene, the driver of a Ford F150 was turning onto Nancy Lane from 50th Avenue when the ground gave out beneath his truck. An underground water main break weakened the foundation under the road, causing the asphalt to collapse under the truck's weight. The now gushing sinkhole swallowed the driver's front wheel. Fortunately, the driver was able to safely exit the truck prior to the arrival of emergency crews. A tow truck was later used to drag the pickup out of the sinkhole. Officers established road closures around the sinkhole while the city of Phoenix Water Services workers responded to the scene. According to city workers, the main was shut down and secured. City of Phoenix Water Services workers were expected to remain at the scene throughout the morning as necessary repairs were made. It was unknown if the break would affect water services to nearby residents.
