NEW YORK, US - JULY 28: Pro-Palestinian activists rallied Monday outside the Permanent Mission of Egypt to the UN, urging Cairo to fully open the Rafah border crossing and allow essential supplies and food aid into Gaza.

Gaza has endured an Israeli blockade for 18 years, with all crossings closed since March 2, worsening famine conditions.

While Egypt has let limited aid trucks pass recently, most relief still enters via the Israeli-controlled Kerem Shalom crossing.

Critics say Egyptian authorities, under Israeli pressure, have kept Rafah largely shut, leaving civilians at risk. However, Egypt cites security concerns and the need for coordination.

Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has pursued a brutal offensive on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, killing nearly 60,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The relentless bombardment has destroyed the enclave and led to food shortages.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
