Italy - July 30, 2025 Researchers have developed a new antibiotic film designed to treat coral diseases by delivering targeted medication directly to infected coral tissue. This innovative patch combines a hydrophilic antibiotic-loaded film with a natural sealant, ensuring precise treatment while protecting the surrounding marine environment. Created through a collaboration between the University of Milano-Bicocca, the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, and the Aquarium of Genoa, the dual-layer system releases antibiotics exclusively where needed. The outer sealant, made from beeswax and plant oils, prevents the spread of antibiotics into the ocean. PhD student Vincenzo Scribano explained, “Thanks to the dual-layer system, the antibiotics are released exclusively on the infected coral area, and the delivery is sealed off by the paste, preventing the spread of antibiotics into the marine environment.” In aquarium tests, this method stopped disease progression in over 90% of cases, proving especially effective against aggressive tissue necrosis diseases common in aquaculture. All materials used—including chitosan derived from shellfish, beeswax, and plant oils—are natural and biodegradable, ensuring no long-term harm to marine ecosystems once the patch degrades. This technology is part of an ongoing research initiative focused on sustainable coral conservation. The MaRHE Center at the Aquarium of Genoa provides a controlled environment for developing and testing these eco-friendly solutions. Researchers stress the importance of responsible material design to protect marine biodiversity and support coral survival amid growing environmental threats.
