In Madrid’s Retiro Park, protesters gathered in front of the Monument to Alfonso XII to denounce Israel’s actions in Palestine. Participants waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as “Murderer Israel,” “Free Palestine,” and “Stop the genocide.” Some demonstrators paddled boats in the park’s artificial lake while waving Palestinian flags and chanting, while others banged pots and pans with spoons brought from home to voice their outrage. Israel has been facing mounting outrage over its deadly war on Gaza, where more than 61,300 people have been killed since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
