China: Chinese robotics firms make leaps toward automated housekeeping
[Voiceover] A new embodied robot from a Chinese firm is pushing the boundaries of what humanoid robots will be able to do in the not-so-distant future. Named Lumen, the robot can do everything from pour beverages to iron. According to its designer, the robot's hardware has 40 degrees of movement freedom and is being trained using a general-purpose embodied intelligence software model. A data operation manager at the company said soon, Lumen will be able to complete tasks faster than it currently does. [Soundbite] Qin Zhen, data operation manager, Hubei Optics Valley Dongzhi Embodied Intelligent Technology Company: "In terms of the hardware, Lumen's movement boasts 40 degrees of freedom, and you can see the finger joints in the hands - such nimble hands are essential for performing such complex operations. On the software side, we train the robot using a general-purpose embodied intelligence model. As the volume of data increases and iterates, it will grow smarter and eventually operate much more smoothly." [Voiceover] Besides Lumen, robots from several companies are receiving training at the Hubei Humanoid Robot Innovation Center with the hopes of one day working in supermarkets, factories, or even homes. But that's the not the only place China's robotics sector is thriving. Researchers at the Hebei University of Technology, for example, have developed a robot that can safely lift an individual from a bed and transfer them to a wheelchair. [Soundbite] Li Yang, intelligent rehabilitation devices researcher, Hebei University of Technology: "We are cooperating with hospitals and nursing homes to realize its specific application in different scenarios. We are improving its functions while promoting the robot in the market to prepare for mass production." [Voiceover] Although China's robots sector is growing exponentially, experts say more research on robot safety and on the ethics of science and technology are required before robot housekeepers can enter homes and communities.
