Cádiz, Spain - August 11, 2025 Atlanterra, Spain – A wildfire near Tarifa is sending thick smoke billowing from the mountains, as helicopters race to contain the fast-moving blaze. Footage recorded by Nicolás Martín, filmed through a car’s side mirror, shows the fire consuming half the mountainside just two hours after it began. The flames are advancing toward residential areas, prompting the evacuation of more than 2,000 people from Atlanterra, including homes, hotels, and the Playa de los Alemanes. Authorities say the spread is being driven by an intense heatwave and strong levante winds. The wildfire also threatens nearby caves containing valuable rupestrian paintings. Some evacuees have been forced to spend the night outside or at a local school in Zahara de los Atunes. This incident comes only a day after another major wildfire in Tarifa was declared extinguished, underscoring the region’s heightened fire risk during this period. Nicolás Martín said in Spanish: “We escaped just in time from a fire that in 30 minutes devoured the mountain and came down to the houses. Thanks to Plan INFOCA and all the means and human resources that helped thousands of people evacuate. Hopefully, we won’t have to regret any personal injuries.”
