China: China's home appliance subsidy program drives business of global suppliers

【Voice_over】 As of July this year, an over 60 percent sales increase of large-size TVs, a 47 percent increase of cellphones, and and over 130 percent increase of computers. This is what one electronic products retailer in Shanghai recorded, year-on-year. [Soundbite] Zheng Songwu, Reporter: "The sales of household appliances have surged since China released the subsidy policy last year. To make it simple, consumers can buy appliances like TVs or cellphones at much lower prices both online and at retailers." [Voiceover] China implemented its new subsidy policy in January, 2025, investing over 40 billion USD as home appliance subsidies for the whole year. The highest subsidy can be 2,000 yuan, or nearly 300 U.S. dollars, for each product category. [Soundbite] Zhao Hongfu, Store Manager, Suning.com, Changning Road Branch, Shanghai "The total sales of '3C' products including computers and cellphones have increased about 120 percent compared to last year, which is huge. The increase of computers notably is 140 percent." [Voiceover] Increasing sales of home appliances has led to the higher demand for semiconductor materials, and optical and electronic materials. This has enhanced more cooperation with world-leading enterprises. [Soundbite] Damien Tuleu, Executive Vice President, Merck Electronics: "Such policy is definitely helping quite frequently the overall electric industries. That's certainly, I think, from a kind of demand point of view. I'm very glad to see that the industry in China concerning this particular is still very dynamic. As you know, China is definitely representing more than half of the total supply of this world, and we see definitely a lot of dynamics." [Voiceover] China is the world's largest semiconductor consumer market, and in the display sector, China is the world's biggest LCD production base. As China's subsidy program continues to power growth in appliance sales, international tech leaders are seizing the opportunity to deepen partnerships. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
