'Off-grid' grandad being forced to leave caravan after 34 years holding firm
A grandad is locked in a battle to save the 'off-grid' caravan he has called home for 34 years - saying he will not leave for any amount of money.
Bob Thwaites, 78, has lived by a creek in Swanscombe, Kent, for more than three decades after he moved in following the breakdown of his marriage.
The grandad-of-two had been working nearby the site doing underground cabling and decided to live there permanently as he had nowhere else to go.
Over time, the Swanscombe peninsula has become home to him and his cat, Rusty, and is now equipped with solar panels, a wood burning stove, and a gas cooker.
But, as of July 21, new landowners Land Logical have built fence - said to be six-foot high - around the land, blocking all road access to Bob's home.
This means that if he wishes to get food or water, he must trek the mile-long walk on foot, or risk not being allowed back to his property.
Bob said: "Originally, I only lived here out of necessity. Now I love it. They haven't got enough money to pay me to leave here. "
"I have got no neighbours, and I like being on my own. But I also am friends with dog walkers and the boat club. I get on very well with the locals, and they are all happy with me being here. "
"If I drive out they won't let me back in. If I need gas, I don't know what I will do, even a young fit man couldn't carry a gas bottle all the way down here. "
"They have basically stranded me. I am trapped."
The local says the only contact he has had with Land Logical was a security guard coming down a few weeks ago to tell him that they want him to vacate the premises.
However, Bob says he will not stop fighting to leave his home as he had wished to spend the rest of his life there.
He added: "There was no downside to living here before they did this. It is not a dump."
"It is just nonsense. This has really upset me. If I am lucky I have ten years left, and I was hoping that I would die here. I wanted this to be my home for the rest of my life. "
"Even if I was illegally here I don't think they can break in without a court order, so if they come here I will call the police."
"I just want to stay as I am. I am not materialistic, all I want to do is be left alone. I am not obstructing anything, or in their way."
Bob says that luckily so far locals have been helping him out with food and water deliveries, but he says that he has been "really struggling" to manage the walk."
He now fears that the company will force him out, as he says he has nowhere else to go.
He said: "I have no money, I can't afford to go anywhere. I would lose my mind in a council house."
"I am worried because they are a multi-million-pound company and I am just an ordinary bloke. Money wins every time."
"When you are dealing with a big company like this you have no rights. They have the money and the legal teams."
The fence has also blocked access for members of the 50-year-old Broadness Cruising Club, who now allegedly must be escorted by security to and from their boats.
Bob says that the club have been told that any of their boats or equipment left on the land after August 31 will be treated as abandoned.
New member Amaru Fleary, 38, from Camden, has set up a GoFundMe page to try and save the club which he says has been an amazing community hub.
The page has now reached over £2,400 in donations, with many supporters sharing concerns for Bob and his home.
Amaru, who is a dad-of-four, said: "The people who I have met here are a great bunch of people, particularly Bob. He is a great guy with some amazing stories to tell. "
"He seems to have been impacted the worst because he can no longer drive in and out with his supplies. I just feel really bad for Bob. Worst case scenario for me I will move my boat, but I don't know what he will do. "
"I do fear for his welfare. It is not an easy trek, it is at least a mile walk through brambles. I don't know how the developers expect him to do that. "
"I am at a loss. It feels like we don't have any options. We can't afford legal help. I am really frustrated."
"People have been boating there since before I was born and all because some developer wants a foothold that is erased from history."
Land Logical declined to comment.
