Rescue teams are searching for the pilot of a light aircraft that crashed onto a beach in South Africa on Thursday.

Footage shows the plane plunging into the shallow water on the Durban North Beach along Sun Coast Casino in KwaZulu-Natal on August 14.

Police cars and ambulances rushed onto the sand amid a frantic search for the survivor. However, the search was called off before resuming on Friday morning

Officials said the aircraft was part of the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals Global Summit airshow. It was seen plunging into the shallows just after 2 pm local time.

Police said the ZS-AEC Extra 300 aircraft crashed during its final display at the local aviation festival.

An Accident and Incident Investigations Division (AIID) spokesman said: 'The Emergency Medical Services and law enforcement immediately attended to the scene. The AIID will provide updates as soon as further information is available.'

Police spokesman Robert Netshuinda said the plane wreckage had been recovered. The search for the pilot was continuing on Friday.

He added: 'Police search and rescue team, working together with their private counterparts, have recovered some wreckage of the aircraft and the search for the pilot is ongoing.'
