Coast Guard removes abandoned navy ship in South Carolina
The Coast Guard removed an abandoned Navy ship from the waters of South Carolina.
Footage shows the 120ft motor vessel Hazar grounded in Bohicket Creek near a private dock on Tuesday, August 19.
Multiple Coast Guard units based in Charleston worked with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) to carry out the operation.
The Hazar, a former US Navy torpedo vessel, had been left in the waterway for several years, raising concerns about pollution and safety risks.
Last year, crews extracted more than 3,500 gallons of oil and other hazardous liquids to prevent contamination of the creek.
Dr Tom Mullikin, Director of SCDNR, said: 'This removal is more than a cleanup - it's a commitment to protecting our coastal resources and ensuring that sensitive habitats like our salt marshes remain healthy and resilient.'
