RYAZAN, RUSSIA - AUG. 15, 2025 - RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT “RUSSIAN MINISTRY OF EMERGENCY SITUATIONS” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO —EDITORIAL USE ONLY — At least five people were killed and 117 were injured after a blast at a gunpowder workshop in the Elastic synthetic fiber plant in Shilovsky district, Ryazan region, southeast of Moscow, emergency officials said Friday, Aug. 15.
The explosion triggered a fire at the facility, and preliminary reports indicate that the workshop building has been completely destroyed. Authorities have deployed emergency teams to the site to carry out search and rescue operations.
Russian Emergencies Ministry specialists, including airborne unit "Centrospas" and the Noginsk Rescue Center, have sent an additional 100 rescuers, including six canine units and 10 pieces of equipment, to assist at the scene.
All personnel from the plant have been evacuated, and there is no threat to nearby residential areas. The number of injured is still being confirmed as rescue teams continue operations.
Around 350 emergency personnel and more than 80 units of equipment are involved in the ongoing response, officials said.
