GAZA, PALESTINE - AUGUST 16, 2025: A charity distributed food in Gaza city on Saturday, Aug. 16, as famine worsened in the Gaza Strip under Israel's blockade.

Hunger-stricken Palestinians, including children, flocked to the distribution point to receive small portions of food.

The hunger crisis has spiraled into a full-scale humanitarian catastrophe. The Government Media Office in Gaza reports that 1.2 million children face “severe food insecurity,” and at least 240 Palestinians, including 107 children, have died from starvation since October 2023.

The crisis deepened on March 2, when Israel sealed all crossings into the enclave, blocking humanitarian aid despite relief trucks waiting at the border. What little is allowed falls far short of the population’s needs. Over two million Palestinians have been displaced for nearly two years, crammed into shelters and tents where disease spreads quickly.

The Israeli army, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued its genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, killing more than 61,900 Palestinians. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
