On August 22, 2020, torrents from the Ozluce and Sogukpinar streams merged in Espiye district, sweeping away homes, vehicles and the Yesilkoy Kizilcukur Mosque. Eleven people lost their lives and three went missing in the disaster, which left deep scars on the community. Only the mosque’s minaret survived, standing tall amid the devastation. Since then, it has become both a symbol of resilience for locals and a landmark for travelers, who often stop to photograph it and learn its story. For the people of Giresun, the solitary tower is more than a ruin—it is a monument to loss, a memory of a night when floodwaters rose without mercy, and a marker of the region’s struggle against nature’s force.
