Vietnam: Typhoon Kajiki Submerges Hanoi Streets As Cars And Motorcycles Nearly Disappear
Hanoi, Vietnam - August 25, 2025 Severe flooding engulfed the capital after Typhoon Kajiki made landfall on August 25, 2025, leaving streets underwater and vehicles almost completely submerged. Video filmed by Huyền Phạm shows floodwaters rising high enough to cover much of the cars and motorcycles, with residents struggling to move through submerged roads. The overwhelming force of the typhoon brought life in the city to a standstill. The storm left a trail of devastation. At least three people were killed, and 10 others were injured. Nearly 7,000 homes were affected, 28,800 hectares of rice fields inundated, and 18,000 trees toppled. The flooding was intensified when West Lake overflowed, pouring water into surrounding neighborhoods and worsening the conditions in residential areas. This disaster struck during preparations for Vietnam’s National Day parade, underscoring the storm’s heavy impact on the capital. Reflecting on the flooding, Huyền Phạm said: “Today Hanoi is flooded by Typhoon No. 5, which reminds me of the historic flood of 2008, on November 20. That year, despite the heavy rain and flood, my younger sister and I still went to visit our teacher. When we returned, our motorbike broke down after the exhaust pipe was submerged. We tried to push it to a repair shop, but luckily two students stopped, helped us, and managed to fix it so it started again. They reminded us to keep revving the engine to prevent water from entering the exhaust. We thanked them but forgot to ask their names or addresses. I will always remember that feeling of gratitude. I feel lucky because whenever I face difficulties, somehow, I always receive help.” She added that on the morning of August 26, 2025, at 08:05 AM, she filmed another video while she and her three children made their way through the rain and floods to get to school, even as many others stayed home.
