Storyline: Herders in southern part of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have started autumn migration of their herds as it turns cold. In Xinjiang, herders move their herds over long distance to different pastures based on the grass's growth cycles throughout the year, so as to allow grasslands to recover and ensure the sustainability of natural resources. As temperatures dipped to around 10 degrees Celsius in a pastoral area in Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture, nearly 100 herders and 12,000 livestock have set out on the migration. Local police officers escorted the migration by vehicles or on horsebacks throughout the journey, and were particularly careful when passing through canyons, mountain passes or other critical sections. Over 30 herders in Wensu County of Aksu Prefecture have also started to move their some 1,000 head of livestock with the support of local police. This year's autumn migration in southern Xinjiang is expected to last until early October.
