STORYLINE:

In a mountainous region of China's Xinjiang, many herders spend the winter at their homes in the township to escape the cold, and head to nearby pastures for grazing in the summer.

For many years, Li Lin, a doctor with a community health service center in Tacheng, has been following the herders as they moved, trying his best to save lives.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LI LIN, Deputy director of Miao'ergou community health service center in Tacheng
"This is the only road leading to our place. It's a bit better in summer, but in winter, when there's heavy snow and wind, we'd always try to search for the right path across the mountains, whether riding a motorcycle or a horse. We'll find a path with less snow and follow the ridges. If we stay on the ridges, we'll be going the right way."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Kazakh): GEMING AYTIBE, Resident in Tacheng, China's Xinjiang
"Li Lin is truly a good person. Sometimes, even in windy weather, he would come to our homes to treat patients. He's genuinely kind-hearted."

Since 1987, Li Lin has traveled around 170,000 km for medical visits, treating tens of thousands of people. He has saved 59 critically ill patients.

Over the past 37 years, Li had multiple opportunities to transfer to a higher-level hospital with better conditions, but each time, he chose to stay.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): LI LIN, Deputy director of Miao'ergou community health service center in Tacheng
"If the herders need me, I will stay here, dedicating the rest of my life to this work."
