Father, 78, and daughter, 40, die after eating poisonous mushrooms in Thai curry
A father and his daughter were killed after eating a Thai curry made with deadly wild mushrooms.
Boonpan, 78, and his daughter Wijitra, 40, tucked into the dinner laced with poisonous fungi before collapsing at their home in Chiang Rai, Thailand, on August 22.
Shocked relatives panicked when the father foamed at the mouth and convulsed violently shortly after finishing his bowl. They then barged into Wijitra's locked bedroom and also found her unconscious.
Both were rushed to hospitals but were later pronounced dead.
Police Captain Boonchuay Kanthawong of the Mae Chan Police Station went to Mae Chan Hospital to investigate the cause of death. Upon arrival, he found Wijitra lying lifeless on a hospital bed in the emergency ward.
He said: 'A preliminary examination revealed no external wounds from assault. Earlier, Mr Boonpan, the father of the deceased who showed the same symptoms, was transferred to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital for further treatment.
'However, the hospital later contacted his relatives and informed them of the unfortunate news of his passing.'
Wijitra's elder sister, Thatsanee, 49, said the tragic meal was prepared after a friend had gifted the mushrooms to their family.
Unaware of the danger, their mother cooked the mushrooms into a large pot of curry but the rest of the family escaped harm as Boonpan and Wijitra had eaten dinner first.
Thatsanee said: 'My sister had never cooked with this type of mushroom before because she didn't usually like mushrooms. This was the first time.
'A friend gave her some, so she asked our mother to make them into a curry and even shared some with relatives, but they hadn't cooked theirs yet.
'I love mushrooms, but after what happened, I will never touch them again. It's difficult to tell which ones are poisonous.'
Authorities said a sample of the poisonous mushrooms was sent to the Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital for analysis.
Last July, three family members also died after eating a curry made with poisonous wild mushrooms in Buriram, northeast Thailand.
Khamphan Thamniyom, 46, foraged the fungi, which his mother Khamchan, 66, cooked into a Tom Yum curry. However, the delicious meal left Khamphan, his wife Samlee, 50, and his father Boon, 69, dead within two weeks.
Khamchan, who ate only a small portion, survived. Bizarrely, she later admitted she knew the mushrooms were toxic.
Community leaders later warned villagers to be careful when eating mushrooms foraged from the wild.
