HANOI, VIETNAM - SEPT. 2: Crowds filled the capital Hanoi on Tuesday, Sept. 2, as Vietnam staged a military parade and public celebrations to mark the 80th anniversary of its independence.

The anniversary events featured military units, students and civil groups marching in processions through the city center, where people lined the streets to watch and celebrate.

Authorities said security was tightened across Hanoi and the commemorations were set to continue throughout the day.

On Sept. 2, 1945, Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh declared independence, announcing the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the end of French colonial rule.
