Storyline: China expands payment options for international travelers [Voice_over] Spending money as a tourist in China is getting easier, thanks to diverse payment methods and a wider variety of accepted forms of payment. In Shanghai, paying for a taxi fare is as easy as tapping your international credit or debit card to the driver’s phone. Tourists like Gilbert, who’s been to China previously, say gone are the days of walking around with a pocket full of renminbi. [Sound_bite] Gilbert, Rwandan traveler: "I got really surprised because back in days, we were actually used to use cash as foreigners just traveling in Shanghai. But now it's very convenient because you can use your back-home country's bank card, like a visa card, whatever, and then you just swipe and that's all. Life is easy." [Voice_over] And if metro travel is more convenient, the city has also upgraded its subway turnstiles for a similar ‘tap and go’ experience. Because there’s no need to present a physical ticket, foreigners can avoid any potential confusion that comes with navigating a self-serve ticket kiosk. [Sound_bite] Xie Hua, General manager, Credit card department, Bank of Communications, Shanghai Branch: "For subway travel, we have introduced the 'flash pay' function for bank cards and the digital yuan's hard wallet for 'tap-to-pay' at gate passages. These efforts are focused on addressing inconvenience in travel by both domestic and international travelers, making it easier for them to make payment." [Voice_over] Data shows that in June and July of this year, there were three times as many transactions made by foreigners’ international bank cards through WeChat pay, for three times the value, as there were during the same period last year.
