"After two days or a week, we may have to leave the place again, depending on what the attackers want, said a Palestinian man displaced from Gaza city and now living in the UNRWA school. For three days, they searched for a safe place and they were under constant threat, with UAVs firing on them, including at children, women, and young girls in their group. Eventually they went to a UNRWA school in hopes of finding shelter. Another Palestinian man, who also took shelter at the UNRWA school, said: "I am now staying there with about ten people, living in fear, stress, and constant shelling. The bombardment continues through the night in Gaza City. We are naturally afraid for our children, our families, and our lives." Israeli drones ordered civilians to evacuate to the south, but many refused, pointing to relentless strikes there and the absence of shelter. The Gaza Government Media Office said moving south was “virtually impossible,” with shelters operating at more than 96% capacity and unable to absorb the 1.3 million people already displaced from Gaza City. Many Palestinians, repeatedly displaced from northern Gaza, have no access to shelters or tents. With little transport and severe economic hardship, many cannot afford to flee south, leaving numerous families to sleep on the streets in western Gaza. Israel’s full blockade of Gaza, in place since early March, has created catastrophic conditions for its 2.4 million residents, leading to famine, widespread disease and the collapse of essential services. Israel has killed around 63,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Reporting by Mohammed Nassar / Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
