Palestinians evacuating Gaza City for an Israel-designated humanitarian zone voiced fear and helplessness on Saturday, warning that the area may pose even greater dangers than the city they fled. Earlier that day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the establishment of a "humanitarian zone" in Al-Mawasi, citing the expansion of ground operations in Gaza City and the targeting of Hamas strongholds as part of Operation Gideon's Chariots II. The statement emphasized that the zone, which contains vital humanitarian infrastructure, would ensure the continued delivery of food, tents, medicines and medical equipment. Over the past weeks, the Israeli military has expanded its operations in Gaza City and other areas of the coastal enclave, saying the goal is to eliminate Hamas. Fayeq Ajjour, an evacuee suffering from kidney disease, expressed helplessness over leaving Gaza City. Since the 2023 Hamas attack on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and led to about 250 hostages being taken, Israel's offensive in Gaza has killed more than 64,000 Palestinians and wounded 161,000, according to Gaza-based health authorities.
