Mountains of trash pose threat to people's health in Gaza City
Storyline: More than 250,000 tons of uncollected waste have piled up across Gaza City after Israeli bombardments destroyed most garbage trucks in the enclave, collapsing sanitation services and unleashing a growing public health crisis as displaced families are forced to shelter beside landfill sites. Among the mounds of trash, displaced families now live in makeshift shelters. The Sabir Sobeh family, who fled from northern Gaza, set up a tent by the landfill in Yarmouk after losing their home and having no other place to go. "We were forced to live here in Yarmouk next to the landfill because we couldn’t find any other place to stay. All the people of Beit Lahia, Beit Hanoun and Jabalia were displaced and scattered. Now they drop leaflets asking us to flee again, but we will not leave, this is our land," said Sabir Sobeh, a displaced Palestinian. Authorities in Gaza City say they can no longer perform their duties with more than 80 percent of collection vehicles destroyed and Israeli tanks blocking their access to main landfills. Officials warn the situation is deteriorating into a public health nightmare. "Gaza City is suffering from the accumulation of more than a quarter of a million tons of waste across different areas. This waste has now become an environmental and health disaster that threatens people’s lives and causes the spread of epidemics and various diseases. The occupation has destroyed more than 85 percent of the municipality’s vehicles that carry out waste collection," said Asim Al-Nabih, the spokesman of Gaza Municipality. For the displaced, the impact is already severe. Residents said illness is spreading rapidly through crowded shelters. "Disease has struck us. Women, men, and children are all sick now. There is no solution so far. We have no choice but to stay here. People are being killed by the shelling, and we are dying from these diseases all around us," said Ziad Halles, another displaced Palestinian. The massive pileup of garbage across Gaza has forced municipalities to dump waste in over 200 densely populated areas. The municipality estimates around a quarter of a million tons of waste have accumulated in the south, with a similar volume in the north of the besieged enclave.
