China: Ultra Zero-carbon building inaugurated in east China
Storyline: Ultra Zero-carbon building inaugurated in east China [Voice_over] A new office building has just been inaugurated in east China’s Qingdao City that’s fitted with cutting edge technology to help it achieve 100 percent green energy substitution. The 117-meter, 23 story structure is the new headquarters for Teld New Energy Company, one of China’s leading electric-vehicle charging firms. Three of the building’s facades are covered with photovoltaic glass "curtains" that provide direct current electricity, with surplus energy being stored on 14 spent EV batteries kept in the building’s basement. There aren’t any light switches or air conditioning control pads on the walls. But there are sensors that automatically control the lighting and temperature. One of the most noteworthy features is the building’s automated vertical parking facility that not only parks vehicles in 35 seconds but also hooks them up to the building’s power grid. [Sound_bite] Yu Dexiang, chairman, TELD New Energy: "By consuming green electricity, we can save about 2,500 tons of carbon emissions annually. Digitalization has reduced our investment cost of the building by 20 percent to 30 percent, increased operational efficiency by 30 percent, and lowered energy consumption by about 30 percent.” [Voice_over] Innovative projects like the zero-carbon office building are helping drive the country’s green energy transition. According to recent data from the National Energy Administration, renewable energy accounted for nearly 40 percent of the country’s total electricity output in the first half of the year.
