Palestinian death toll in Gaza rises to 64,605
Storyline: The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 64,605, with 163,319 others injured since the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted on October 7, 2023, Gaza's health authorities said in a statement on Tuesday. Over the past 24 hours, hospitals across Gaza reported 83 deaths and 223 injuries in Israeli attacks, according to the statement. On the day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a notice calling on all residents of Gaza City to evacuate, as they prepared to launch a large-scale ground offensive against Hamas militants in the area. Israeli media reported that this was the first time the Israeli military had issued a "citywide evacuation order" The IDF’s Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee said that the army is determined to defeat Hamas and will operate in the Gaza City area with great force, as it has done throughout the Gaza Strip. Palestinians were instructed to move via the coastal highway to the Israeli-designated "humanitarian zone" in the southern Gaza Strip, he said. On the same day, the Gaza media office said in a statement that despite plans that could result in permanent forced displacement, over 1.2 million Palestinians remain entrenched in Gaza City and its northern area, refusing to be forced to relocate southward. Gaza City and its northern area currently has a population of more than 1.3 million, it added. The statement said that over the past few days, approximately 35,000 Palestinians had been forced to flee to the southern Gaza Strip due to pressure from Israeli bombardments, adding that due to a lack of basic necessities in the south, over 12,000, however, had returned by Sunday evening. It said that despite the fact that approximately 800,000 people currently live in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis and Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, designated by Israel as a "humanitarian safe zone", the areas have been subjected to 109 attacks, claiming over 2,000 lives. Noting that those areas are completely devoid of the necessities of life, lacking any real hospitals or infrastructure, and lacking any basic services such as water, food, shelter, electricity, or education, making survival virtually impossible, the statement said that the "sanctuary" areas designated on the Israeli military map cover no more than 12 percent of the total area of the Gaza Strip, yet they attempt to accommodate over 1.7 million Palestinians. It said that Israel's systematic policy of forced transfers, aimed at clearing northern Gaza and Gaza City, constitutes a crime in violation of international law and international humanitarian law.
