American nurse in Gaza calls for global military intervention to protect civilians
-KHAN YOUNIS, PALESTINE — SEPT. 8, 2025: An American nurse working at a hospital in Gaza has appealed for urgent international military intervention, saying it is the only way to protect civilians amid the escalating violence of Israel. Annelise has traveled to war-ravaged Gaza to help treat Palestinian patients amid ongoing Israeli attacks and a blockade. She has begun working voluntarily in the intensive care unit of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip. "As an American, I feel an obligation to be helping the Palestinian people in Gaza because of the contributions that the U.S. has made towards the military, Israel, and the effect that they have had on Gaza," she told Anadolu. The American nurse said that the health system is on the verge of collapse under heavy attacks and blockade. "I think that the world needs to intervene at this point militarily in order to defend Gaza and to stop what's happening," she urged. Pointing out that Israel has created an environment where people in Gaza are not only being attacked and killed, she said, “They’re also making it so that we can’t help them in any capacity once they come to the hospitals.” She also emphasized that even hospitals are being targeted and that both patients and healthcare workers are in constant danger. The nurse highlighted the difficult conditions healthcare workers face, including living in displacement tents and fearing for their lives while on duty. "But they're still coming in every single day and they're still taking care of patients to the best of their abilities with the low resources that are available." "I think that it is imperative that everyone is speaking out about what's happening here and that this is not allowed to continue. And it also needs to be called what it is, which is a genocide." The ongoing genocide in Gaza entered its 700th day on Friday, with Israel having killed more than 64,600 Palestinians. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Reporting by Doaa Albaz / Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
